2024
A YEAR IN REVIEW FOR SPECTREM AIR
As 2024 wraps up, Louis Polomé, General Manager of Spectrem Air, reflects on the year’s challenges and opportunities in geophysics mining exploration.
DO YOU HAVE ANY COMMENTS OR INSIGHTS ON THE GEOPHYSICS AND MINING EXPLORATION LANDSCAPE IN 2024? WERE THERE ANY SURPRISES (GOOD OR BAD)?
Mining exploration remains tied to fluctuations in global markets, which are often swayed by political and economic events. This past year has been particularly volatile, prompting mining companies to approach costly exploration projects with caution.
At Spectrem Air, we’ve navigated such market shifts for over 20 years. When we anticipate an eventual downswing, we use this time to enhance our technology and ensure our team is fully equipped to deliver top-tier services when demand rebounds.
Meanwhile, securing permits for exploration is becoming increasingly complex, as local communities and environmental groups gain influence and voice concerns about long-term environmental impacts.
We have realised that our engagement efforts must therefore broaden beyond just providing a product to our clients. By actively connecting with local communities and environmental advocates, we can highlight that our airborne exploration is non-intrusive and, because of its accuracy, means that future mining efforts will be focused to specific areas, minimizing environmental damage.
WHAT WERE BUSINESS HIGHLIGHTS FOR SPECTREM THIS PAST YEAR?
We take pride in our extensive experience across Africa. This year, we successfully completed a major project in Angola, along with several others across the continent.
Our ongoing investment in technology continues to deliver exceptional results. With our advanced capabilities, we can map mineral potential deep below the surface, helping clients sterilise ground and pinpoint the exact areas to focus their exploration efforts.
The Spectrem Air team is also expanding. As we close 2024, we’re excited to welcome two new team members, whose fresh perspectives and skills will strengthen our business.
WHAT DO YOU ANTICIPATE 2025 HAS IN STORE FOR THE SECTOR AND SPECTREM?
Unfortunately, we’ve seen limited initiatives from many parts of Africa to expand in the mining sector. With the commodities markets unlikely to stabilize in 2025, significant changes on the continent seem unlikely.
However, countries outside Africa—such as Saudi Arabia, Australia, and India—are increasing their investment in mining exploration by making large regional data available to exploration groups. Spectrem Air’s advanced technology is perfectly positioned to meet these demands.
This marks an exciting shift for us as we expand beyond our traditional African focus to explore opportunities in new international markets.
ARE THERE ANY AIRBORNE ELECTRICAL TECHNOLOGICAL ADVANCEMENTS OR PROCESSES WE SHOULD BE ON THE LOOKOUT FOR?
It’s an exciting time in the industry as technology for airborne geophysics and exploration continues to advance.
The details extracted from the data we generate is becoming increasingly sophisticated, and the final results play a crucial role in the service we offer. To enhance this, we’re integrating more visualisation and enhanced geological models into our reporting, adding significant value through expert data interpretation.
Spectrem Air remains committed to investing in cutting-edge technology and equipping our team with the expertise to leverage it. We aim to solidify our position as a global leader in airborne geophysical exploration and the partner of choice for companies entering new territories.
DO YOU HAVE A MESSAGE FOR YOUR TEAM TO READY THEM FOR THE NEW YEAR?
A heartfelt thank you to the Spectrem Air team for their exemplary work this year. I wish everyone a joyful festive season and look forward to starting the new year with renewed energy and enthusiasm!
I would also like to remind the team that it’s an exciting time for Spectrem Air as we integrate advanced technology in our efforts to explore opportunities beyond the African continent.
